The wonderful conical fell of Harter Fell rises
above the Duddon and Eskdale valleys but to the south west a long
rough ridge runs crossing several lower peaks until terminating
at Black Combe, above Whicham.
Although a long walk the route does cross two roads and so can
be easily split into fine smaller sections, although the whole
route is highly recommended. Several sections of the walk can
be particularly damp underfoot, so the walk is not recommended
after a particularly wet period!
The route can also be started from Jubilee Bridge at the foot
of the Hardknott Pass Road, but we will start this route at the
summit of Hard Knott Pass., Follow the path south from the pass
climbing below Demming Crag and above the Forested land on the
Eskdale side of the fell until the path climbs to the spectacular
rocky summit of Harter Fell.
From the summit of Harter Fell descend to the south west to cross
the open bowl above Spothow Gill to climb by long crag to the
summit of Green Crag.
From Green Crag cross to the south west and follow the ridge
to Great Worm Crag, either crossing by White Crag or White How
before descending to the roadside at Brown Rigg. Follow the road
to the right before taking a small lane to the left; follow this
lane to Woodend and the Bridleway to Devoke Water.
As you reach Devoke Water climb to the left on the shoulder between
Rigg Beck and Hall beck to Rowantree How and climb to the summits
of Woodend Height and Yoadcastle.
Continue south on this fine rocky ridge to the summit of Stainton
Pike before climbing again to the summit of Whitfell and Burn
Moor before crossing a shallow col to climb south again to the
summits of Buck Barrow.
Drop down to the south from Buckbarrow to the wall below and
follow this to the road below, crossing the road and climbing
to the small outcrop of Stoneside Hill.
Continue to follow the wall south descending to cross the damp
Black Dub before climbing again; follow the wall up the gentle
grassy slopes above Stoupdale Crags and Whitecobe Screes to the
summit of Black Combe.
A good track descends south from the summit of Black Combe over
Townend Knotts to Moor Gill passing the farmhouse at Mirkbank
and crossing the fields to Whicham.
