Description:
A wonderful walk climbing one of the
more spectacluar mountains in the northern Lake District.
The route starts from the vilage of Threlkels,
from outside the Horse and Farrier pub we will follow
footaths across the fields to Gategill Farm. We will climb
the path above the farm to cross the atream above the
intake wall, near the old mine workings, here a path climbs
steeply, zig zagging for a while over grassy slopes until
the ridge begins to narrow and become more rocky. We will
follow this ridge, a fine rocky crest (all the difficult
places can be avoided if necisary) until it emerges on
the summit of Blencathra.
All along the summit ridge we will have
wonderful views to the south, over Derwent water and sometimes
all the way to Morcambe Bay. To the north will be the
wide expanse of the Back O'Skiddaw fells.
We will follow the ridge to the west
to the Knowe Crags where we will descend on a newly made
path, descending over Blease Fell as the path descends
to the intake wall above Threlkeld, a path descending
alongside Blease Gill will take us back into Threlkeld.
