| Follow the track beyond the New Dungeon
Ghyll hotel, following the western bank of Stickle Ghyll at the
first footbridge cross the stream and follow the less worn footpath
on the east side of the stream. Continue past the waterfalls and
under Tarn Crag until the gradient eases at Stickle Tarn.
From the Dam at Stickle Tarn the impressive rock face of Pavey
Ark can be seen above.
The line of Jacks Rake can be clearly seen from here climbing from
the lower right side of the crag to the top left.
Follow the edge of the tarn to the right where a path climbs steeply
over loose scree to the foot of the Jacks Rake path.
The first section of the rake follows polished but solid rock up
a trough to a tree before a steeper, more exposed step. The trough
now continues until it exits onto a broad buttress, a short climb
leads to easier rock above and easy slabs lea to a cairn marking
to top of the climb, from here the summit is just a short distance
to the right.
From here the route goes west to the summit of Thunacar Knott,
there are many small paths here but many don’t go anywhere
in particular, on a clear day you will be able to see the best route,
but in bad weather it may be advisable to take a bearing!
From Thunacar Knott a good path heads south to Harrison Stickle,
at first it follows the fence posts until they veer west. Continue
on this path to the rocky summit of Harrison Stickle.
A large hollow Lies between Harrison Stickle and Pike O’
Stickle, it may look easier going to circle to the north of the
hollow to avoid loosing height, but this adds a lot of distance
to the route, it is always easier going to cross the hollow (the
climb on the far side is never as hard as it looks!). Descend the
steep path to the west of Harrison Stickle crossing the Stepping
Stones at the stream and continue straight on up the path to Pike
O’ Stickle with an easy scramble up to the summit.
Retrace your route from the summit to the footpath below turning
south east here along the easy ridge to Loft Crag (the summit is
just off to the right of the path).
Continue down this path along the shoulder descending over a steeper
section of the path over Mark Gate and past the Waterfalls of Dungeon
Ghyll. Crossing the fields back to the start point.
